When it seems not to be working

You have worked long and hard, and the results do not seem to be showing up. To make matters worse, you spent a lot of money with almost nonexistent results.

What could be the matter?

You started a business or side hustle, forex trading, crypto, commodities, drop shipping, network marketing, e-commerce, wrote a book, started a blog, podcast, or YouTube channel, you name it. The experience is a far different world from the promise.

After expending so much time, energy, and money, you are not much farther from where you started.

Things not working is a familiar territory. We each have war stories to share.

What went wrong?

Could it be a scam? Sometimes it is, but more often than not, they may not be scams.

Could it be that we don’t have what it takes? That could be the case if we are in the wrong lane.

Could it be that we are impatient?

This is mostly the case based on my experience and observation. Success takes a process. This includes starting the project, committing to learning the ropes (enrolling in school), spending money and losing money as you make mistakes (paying tuition), and learning from your mistakes and applying lessons learned until you get it (passing exams).

This process takes time. Trusting and sticking to the process takes patience, endurance, and long-suffering. This is me playing with words, but try to put across the point that when you run out of patience, you switch to endurance and keep going until you achieve your goals, even if it means transitioning to long-suffering.

When things seem not to be working for you, it means it is working on you. It is making you into someone that things can work for.

Imagine your goal is to fly a plane. You are not going to be at the controls of an aircraft anytime soon. You will be working on it, spending time and money for months without your friends and family being able to share photos of you taking off in a plane on Instagram.

During that time, you are becoming a pilot. You cannot fly until you become a pilot. Becoming a pilot takes time. If you humble yourself and go through the process, you will one day take to the sky. If you keep practicing, you get to fly regularly. It takes time.

We have to become first before we can have. Becoming takes time, often in obscurity. It seems as if nothing is happening. There is no audience or followers. It may seem like you are not making progress. It seems like it is not working. To make matters worse, you look across the fence and see that it is working for others. If you look to learn instead of compare, you improve rather than become bitter and depressed.

Are you working on a worthwhile goal? Be rest assured you may not see progress for quite a while, longer than you anticipated. If you budgeted for 6 months, be ready to keep at it for 2 years or more. Don’t be envious of folks on YouTube who made it in 3 months. Thank God for them and focus on your lane. Your journey is different from others because you are not others.

If you are on the right road, you will surely arrive at your destination if you keep going. If you give up too soon, you add another abandoned project to your belt, further undermining your self-confidence.

Allow the process to work on you till it starts to work for you. And when you get to the finish line, you will look back with a grateful heart with the realization that it was working all the time.
